Modest Fashion: Breaking the Major Stereotype!

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

When we think of modest fashion style, the first thing that probably comes to everyone's mind is either Religion or Culture. We assume things. We perceive a woman who dresses modestly to be Muslim, or we think they have cultural and religious obligations. This is the most common stereotype that has been going around through the Fashion Industry for many years. We believe that modest outfits are more than just a personal choice, and it isn't just for women of various faiths. Wanna know why? Continue reading.

What does the term Modest Fashion mean? The term describes fashionable outfits designed and created in a way so that they can be worn by women who choose to wear less revealing clothing. This is, in a way, a sort of a dictionary meaning to make it understandable to those with a stereotype in mind.

The modest fashion market was ignored and left untapped for quite a long time. Until brands starting realizing how much potential it has and what a vast market it is. Brands began launching products, clothing, accessories and many other things; however, with the target in mind Muslim Women. The most popular launch that made headlines throughout the world was the launch of Abayas for luxury brand Dolce and Gabbana. Then we had the Nike Pro Hijab that revolutionized the sportswear industry for Muslim Women and several others created lines naming them "Arabic Clothing" or "Arabian Fashion". Now the question is, why are modest fashion outfits associated with Muslim women? Why just one particular faith? Or Why is a culture associated with this?

The reason for this is perception. We perceive certain people to dress in certain ways. The same applies to this particular case. If you see a woman in revealing clothes, the brain processes the information, and you assume the woman to be non-muslim. This can go the other way around too. You see a woman dressed modestly, automatically she's Muslim. Many know about Islam and the culture of the religion. All of this information contributes to developing perceptions, and we don't blame you or anyone. Indeed, it's true that Muslims and Arabs dress modestly. But that's a whole other interesting topic which has to do with more of religion and religious beliefs.

So, to hopefully break the stereotype that modest fashion is for Muslim women, we have something to share. Recently, the fashion industry has seen a massive rise in particular trends such as the '90s and 80's retro style, vintage dressing etc. You know they say old is gold. But an interesting aspect about these trends is that most of the clothing from those days are modest. Okay, maybe not entirely, but it's true! Most of them are less revealing. It's just the way it is. When they were designed, it was worn by every woman in general. Even today, ladies from all over the world enjoy this trend, brands are bringing back and recreating looks from the past, and these are catered to all women, no labels or tags! Now we can't say that woman who dress up in a retro style with non revealing clothes are of particular faith? Can we?

So, here's our take. We believe that modest clothing is for every single women who makes a choice to dress that way. It doesn't necessarily have to be associated with a particular faith; instead, it should be more about the personality of particular women. What they like, what they dislike, their mood, the trends, how they feel about a specific style. If a woman wants to dress modestly, it's excellent; otherwise, it's her choice. We aim to push women to follow their heart, not what the world thinks.

Of course, we'd love to know what you think! Question yourself! Do you think modest fashion is just for women of particular faith? Or can it be for all women? Do you believe in this segmentation? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
